The department of Chemistry is situated in the western side of Kharagpur Collegepur college on the ground floor. It has three laboratories – Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. There are on balance room, one lecture theatre and Teacher’s common room within the laboratories. The laboratories are all well equipped with chemicals, apparatus and modern useful instruments. The following information narrate a brief account of the department.

1. The department of Chemistry is linked to other departments of college through intercommunication arrangement.

2. The Department possesses the following instruments and equipment

  • Electrical centrifuge
  • Electrical mechanical shaker
  • Ion – exchange deionizer for water purification
  • pH meter
  • Conductometer
  • Electrical and Sulphuric acid melting point baths
  • Magnetic stirrer
  • Vacuum pump
  • A good number of chemical balances including chalnometic balances
  • Steam bath
  • Overhead projector for teaching and seminar lectures
  • Refrigerator
  • Computer with deskjet printer for the use of staff and students
  • LPG gas plant with the capacity of connecting 50 burners

Chemistry Honours course was started in the year 1997 in this college. Forty students are admitted in order of merit. The department has achieved a good reputation in regard to the results of the students. A department library and a reading room have been established in 2008, both for the students and the teachers, with the financial assistance of prof. Loke Nath Basak, formerly Head of the department. A good no. of students after, their graduation from this department have been employed by some companies.

There are a number of significant reasons to build a career in Chemistry. In addition to academic interest, Chemistry has wide – spread applications in industries. Perhaps this is the subject having maximum employment opportunity in teaching, industries and research. There are also scopes for self employment by setting up small scale industry for which government provides training as well as loan to the suitable candidates.

For the aspirants ample scopes are there for further studies, as one can opt for one of many streams like pure Chemistry, biochemistry, applied chemistry (B Tech.) and environmental chemistry. After B.Sc. Honours one can continue with M.Sc. or B.Tech. and then Ph.D or M.Tech. In India there are lot of opportunities of doing research in chemistry. In order to keep pace with the demands for life – style, new fields in chemistry are emerging and challenges to the Chemistry are increasing day by day to save the environment and meet requirements for newer materials in computer, solar cell, medicines etc. So unhesitatingly one can choose chemistry in graduation.

Most of the teachers of the department have achieved distinction in the field of research work.

BSc. Chemistry Honours:

The intake capacity of Chemistry Honours is 67. The general or subsidiary subjects are Mathematics , Physics. It takes 3 years to complete the course. Part – I at the end of 1st Academic year, Part – II at the end of 2nd Academic year and Part – III at the end of 3rd Academic year. B. Sc. General (Pure Science)

The subjects of B. Sc. General (Pure Science) are (a) Mathematics, physics, Chemistry (b) Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science (c) Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science (d) Mathematics, Economics, Geography, History/ Sociology/ Economics. Part – I at the end of 1st Academic year, Part – II at the end of 2nd Academic year and Part – III at the end of 3rd Academic year. B. Sc. General (Bio. Science)

The subjects of B. Sc. General (Bio. Science) are (a) Chemistry, Zoology, Botany (b) Zoology, Botany, Physiology. Part – I at the end of 1st Academic year, Part – II at the end of 2nd Academic year and Part – III at the end of 3rd Academic year.
