The greatest fact in the story of man is his love for wisdom- i.e. Philosophy. The Indian sages pioneered in telling this fact of human life to the world. As the worthy posteriors to this great heritage of India, the founders of this institution introduced studies in Philosophy from the very inception of this great seat of learning. The inherent urge for truth in the essence of man has been so powerful since the dawn of human civilisation that utility of studying this subject could not be defied even in this technologically most advanced society. The present faculty members belonging to this department are successfully carrying forward with that task following the footsteps of the predecessors who had sown seeds of the spirit of dedication to the cause of philosophy. The present generation of teachers with their background of studies in the most reputed institutions like Calcutta University, Visva-Bharati and Jadavpur University are truly faithful to their obligation in upholding the variety and richness of this subject that offers invitation to mankind as a whole to arise and awake with the truth of divinity in man. Some of the teachers have marked contributions in the field of research and have been offering lectures in the P.G. classes in V.U. in the capacity of Guest Teacher for more than a decade. Recently, the vacancy arising out of the retirement of a teacher has been filled up by a Part Time teacher who is no less than a medal winner by virtue of his obtaining rank in the masters’ level. A significant fact of this department is this that all the teachers including the part-timer have uniformly good academic records. Besides, some teachers have the distinction of securing first class in the masters’ level. The teachers have also the record of participation in national seminars, refreshers’ and orientation courses. Some again have the publications of books and articles. They have presented papers in UGC sponsored seminars and Indian Philosophical congress. All the teachers of the department endeavour their best to carry the messages of Indian sages, Greek seers of truth and those of most modern philosophers to the students, and spontaneously remain involved with the thoughts of the philosophers who dedicated their lives in the relentless search of truth.

It is with a view to achieving the goal in the teaching-learning field, this subject of study is taught in three parts; Part-I, Part-II and Part-III for both Honours and General Courses. A Honours course student is required to cover a syllabus of 800 marks in Honours subjects in addition to 750 marks for General Subjects. In most of the batches of students the number of girls outnumbers that of the boys. The student of this town and the neighbouring counterparts as well as from remote villages come to study philosophy in this college. The total strength of student taking Honours and General Course together in this department stands around 800.

One teacher of this department has the record of acting as the Teacher-In-Charge of the College nearly for 3 years (1992-1995). Moreover, the ‘Bharat Jyoti’ award has been conferred on our present Head of the Department by India International Friendship Society, New Delhi. The departmental teachers have exhibited and exemplary spirit of cooperation and coexistence in handling the teaching learning process in the interest of the students. As a result, the trend of success rate of students has always being good barring few exceptions. The department has produced a good no. of rank holders in University conducted final examinations. Again, a good no. of students of this college have obtained Gold, Silver, Bronze Medals in the P.G. level in different year.
