Commerce as a subject of study at the undergraduate level relates to study trade or production which deals with the exchange of goods and services from producer to final consumer. It comprises the trading of something of economic value such as goods, services, information or money between two or more entities.

The Department of commerce which got affiliation from the Calcutta University is the oldest among those of other colleges of the undivided Midnapore district. This department started functioning from the very dawn of Kharagpur College i.e. 1949. Originally the evening shift of this college was exclusively meant for commerce department.

The schedule of classes has been prepared to widen the scope for girls students too to pursue studies in commerce along with the boys. The scholarly and dedicated teachers have raised the status of this department to a very great height.

Students come to this college from a vast area of hinter land of the district. This department has the tradition to attract students from distant areas.

The present members of the faculty leave no stone unturned to manage the department objectively and this has reflected in students’ performances in university level examinations. The Honours students of this department come off with flying colors in their university examinations by securing high percentage of marks and also by obtaining high positions from time to time in different fields.

After passing B.Com (Hons.) in Accountancy, the student, may opt for higher studies like M.Com., C.A., I.C.W.A., M.B.A., G.D.C.S. etc. They are also eligible to appear in several competitive examinations like SSC, W.B.C.S., I.A.S., and other allied services.

Many students of this department are working in several important positions such as college teachers ( of course after obtaining M.Com. degree), school teachers, Executives in govt. office, Audit and Accounts officer etc.  They are largely found also in Indian Railways, Banks and other financial institutions.

The teachers of the department regularly attend refresher course, orientation program, seminar, conference & other academic functions organized by different colleges and Universities. This department consists of highly experienced & scholarly teachers.

B.Com. General

The subjects of B.com. General are all compulsory subjects. It takes 3 years to complete the course. Part – I at the end of 1st Academic year,  Part – II at the end of 2nd Academic year and Part – III at the end of 3rd Academic year. Regarding marks total of 300 marks in Part-I, 600 marks in Part-II and 450 in part-III of which 150 are from compulsory subjects.
