Bengali is the mother tongue of the Bengalese. West Bengal pioneers in the role of teaching and learning in Bengali. Each College of West Bengal has provided a wide scope for teaching and learning in Bengali in U.G. and P.G. levels some times. The P.G. studies have been introduced in our college from 2005. The competency and adequacy of our teaching potential have helped in the introduction of higher learning in Bengali. Four out seven full-time teachers are Doctors in Philosophy. Their competency has been beyond questions. To motivate the students in research works in their future carrier we are taking assistance of six highly reputed guest teachers for teaching.
It is only the jealous students of literature who can find their places as students in our department. The female students have out numbered the male students. The students belong, in general, to this district. Students having mother tongue other than Bengali are Santals and Lodhas. Apart from it a section of students from backward tribal people – Santals, Lodhas also study Bengali. We evaluate students through class tests and personal interactions beyond the classes.
There have been phenomenal changes in the curriculum and syllabi of the department during the last five years. The contemporary literature, folk literature and applied literature have been included in the traditional curriculum. We have given emphasis also on regional literature, comparative foreign literatures and Indian comparative language and literature. For which, we ensure assistance of expert teachers in the field. As a method of teaching we avail of audio-visual aids in the teaching. We posses a tape recorder as a learning resource. We desire to purchase other advanced means of learning although we have not been able to introduced the western style of imparting lessons, yet we can boast of academic interactions that we make with the students.  Heart-felt academic action interactions we make with the students to the cause of the advancement of learning. For recovering the gapes in the teaching the specialised Professors of different academic institutions are invited to deliver lectures in the classes and seminars. The department of Bengali can elevate its potentiality by teaching specifically the Indian literatures, Folk literatures and Comparative literatures.
All the teachers of Bengali are naturally engaged in the various types of research works. They write individually different journals. The inter relationship with other departments particularly with other literature departments is very interactive, friendly, fruitful and cordial. In the literary criticism now a days use the various inter-textual and comparative studies in between the various subjects.
A national seminar on Comparative Indian Literature was organised in the month of November 2006. For 2007 we have to aspire for a new and grand project on Comparative Indian Literature. Beginning from the year 2000 a departmental journal titled ‘Bodhi’ was regularly published up to 2005. A plan for the publications of a new journal of research studies is being devised.
The progress of the academic faculties of the students is being promoted through class tests and field-studies. For the projected planning of our department for academic elevation the students get direct results. They get opportunity to be recruited as teacher in the schools and colleges this gives us satisfaction and essential element of future planning.
Our vision for the future is that we want to make and transform the whole department as the centre of research and study per excellence.
