If you are excited by the past and want to make sense of the world in which you live , ‘history ‘ me your first choice.

History in a wider sense is all that has happened, not nearly all the phenomena of human life, but those of natural world as well. It includes everything that undergoes change ,and as modern science has shown that there is nothing absolutely static, therefore the whole universe , and every part of it, has its history.

The teaching of the department provides a very effective means of acquiring q range of intellectual and personal skills , in research , assimilation , comprehension and analysis, in writing critically, sensitively and relevantly , and in making and communicating clear and coherent judgments. These are skills which encourage self confidence and independence, and are a real asset in employment market. They are also relevant to aspects of life and enable historical pursuits after graduation – whether through reading or visiting historic sites.

The historical spirit of a particular age invaded every field of knowledge. History itself, this double subject, the science and the art combined, begins with the dawn of memory and the invention of speech.

The history department of Kharagpur College came into existence in the year 1949 under the headship of the then principal H.B. Sarkar, a noted internationally famous historian, to promote education of history to the students of the locality. Since then, the department has been striving to keep up exemplary tradition of maintaining harmony and congenial atmosphere for peaceful and meaningful interaction. The popularity of the department is increasing day by day. At present a large number of students intend to take admission in this department.

Some students of the department obtained highest or second highest marks in the University examinations in different years. A good number of students of this department obtained first class in their M.A. Classes.
