English is a most versatile form of language and it has an immense potential for use in any course of unilateral or interactive form of expression. This characteristic nature has been identified as forming landmarks in human civilization in all ages building huge literary works of eternal nature and classical values. Its structural elegance and functional nature of adaptability have set forth its course as the only language commonly used for mutual exchange of thoughts and expression around the world.

      The English Department came into being from the very inception of this college although the Hones. Course in English was introduced in 1994. In a cosmopolitan town like Kharagpur the need for Hones. Course in English had been for a long time. A large number of students opt for English literature. The rush for admission in this department is overwhelming.

        The performance of students in the department of English is Satisfactory. The percentage of students obtaining honors every year in both Part I & Part II examination is about 90%.

            On completion of Honours, students may opt for a career in teaching by qualifying in SSC/SET/NET tests. Quite a good number of students do their post graduate courses in English. Some of them appear in competitive examination for Administrative services, whereas others opt for careers like mass communication & Journalism, Advertisement, content writing, editing and publishing and Business management.

          Considering the overwhelming demand for studies in English honors, the college authority has appointed 4 (four) well experienced as well as young Part – time lecturers to support the existing 2 (two) full time teaching staff of the department.

             Some lecturers of the department have earned high repute in the society for their sincerity and dedication to the cause of the academic upliftment of the students. Some teachers have the record of attaining excellence in their research work and publication.



B.A. English Honours

The intake capacity of English Honours is 98.  The general or subsidiary subjects are History/Sociology/Economics, Philosophy, Political Science, Bengali/Hindi. It takes 3 years to complete the course. Part – I at the end of 1st Academic year,  Part – II at the end of 2nd Academic year and Part – III at the end of 3rd Academic year. Total of 800 marks in honours subjects, 600 in general papers and 150 in compulsory papers. The admission details can be viewed in this link.  

B.A. Morning Sift

The subjects of B.A. General (Morning Shift) are (a) Bengali, English, Pol. Sc./Physical Education (b)Bengali, English, Philosophy (c) Bengali, English, History / Physical Education (d) Bengali, English, Economics / Physical Education (e) Bengali, Pol. Sc., Philosophy (f) Bengali, Pol. Sc., History/ Physical Education (g) Bengali Pol. Sc. Economics/ Physical Education (h) Bengali, Philosophy, Economics (i) English, Philosophy, Economics (j) English, Pol. Sc., History/ Physical Education (k) English, Pol. Sc., Economics/ Physical Education (l) Bengali, Philosophy, History (m) English, Philosophy, History (n) English, Pol. Sc., Philosophy (o) Pol. Sc., Philosophy, Economics (p) Pol. Sc., Philosophy, History. However Mathematics is not allowed with Bengali/Hindi. It takes 3 years to complete the course.
