Formerly called natural philosophy, Physics is concerned with those aspects of nature which can be understood in a fundamental way in terms of elementary particles & laws. In the course of time, various specialized sciences broke away form physics to from autonomous fields of investigation but physics retained its original aim of understanding the structure of the natural world & explaining natural Phenomena. In every area, physics is characterizes not so much by its subject matter content as by the precision & depth of understanding which it seeks. Unlike other disciplines of science where phenomena are described & related in terms of restricted concepts peculiar to their own disciplines, physics always seeks to understand the same phenomena as a special manifestation of the underlying uniform structure of nature as whole.

The undergraduate course in physics pass was introduced under Calcutta University from the very year of establishment of this college. The physics (Hons) course was introduced in1974 under the same University.

The faculty consists of well qualified and outstanding scholars in various branches of physics. Many teachers of the department are engaged in research work, improving teaching methodology and various other academics activities.

The laboratory is spacious and well equipped. The intake capacity to the first year honours class is 45. At least five class test per paper for honours students and two class tests per paper for General student are being held in each academic session. Ten percent (%) weightage for class tests in each paper is considered in the University final examination. The honours students are encouraged to deliver seminar lectures on basic and interesting topics of Physics. The performance of the students of the department is highly satisfactory. The department has produced students of high merit, even having the records securing highest marks and Gold medal from the University. Many students of the department have become distinguished personalities in different academic, technical and administrative fields as well as in the field of research work. Time to time academic and cultural programs are organized by the department to develop the all round personality of the students. The students having sound base in Mathematics at the H.S. level are advised to take Physics Honours at the undergraduate level. Department ensures the academic help to the students both inside and outside the class hours & hence they are discouraged to take private tuitions and advised to attend the classes regularly.

Prospects: The department always has a keen interest in planning the future of the students. The department inspires the students to undergo through Post Graduate courses in different Indian Universities after getting B.Sc. (Hons.) degree. In addition to academic enhancement by doing M.Sc., they can build their career by switching over to technical education such as B.Tech in Calcutta/Jadavpur University, MCA in different Indian Universities. Those students who do not get chance for admission into PG course are often advised to appear for the test conducted by SSC. They get necessary help from our faculty for appearing in their examination. Moreover our faculty gives various information regarding employment opportunity and courses of study for better future.
